The Carolina Women in Timber celebrated their 5th Annual 2024 Conference at the Clinton House Plantation in Clinton, SC on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. This was an all day event celebrating 5 years as an organization! The meeting was dedicated in loving memory of Susan Swanson, Executive Director of AHUG in Kane, Pennsylvania.
49 women were in attendance including 11 special guests. This was our highest attendance to date! Thanks to all who participated in the event!
Butch Green of Foothills Forest Products hosted the 2024 Conference by touring the CWIT members on a logging job where we were able to see the crew in action! Butch Green, Travis Green, Cole Eison, and Bill Hester shared their knowledge of the industry, and allowed us to witness the hard work that goes into a logging job. A special thank you to Jerry Knight of Manulife for donating all the pink safety vests in representation of Breast Cancer Awareness!
The CWIT made history by awarding our very first scholarships! 2 Scholarships were awarded - one to Emma Dunn and one to Taylor Mazza. (See the specific write ups below for all the details!) A delicious lunch was provided by LadyBird Catering, Lucy and Christy Mahon. It was served up by special guests attending our event, Jerry Tumminia, (Green Valley Range) Jeremy Kessinger, (ResourceWise) Jason Burke, (Manulife Investment Management) Matt Malone (F & W Forestry Services) and Tim Kirven (Manulife Investment Management).
Several members won some amazing raffle prizes that were all donated to our event!
After the conference, the ladies got a chance to show off their stuff at the 5 stand clay shoot! Check out all the details by clicking on the links below!

Tom was one of our Special Guests to be appearing at the conference to help serve all the members lunch, but due to the hurricane coming through his area, Tom had to decline attending our 2024 conference, and rightfully so. Nothing more important than safety!
It is because of sponsors like Tom, that we are able to be successful at what we are doing!
Thanks Tom for supporting us and believing in our Mission as we do!

3 August 2024 ~ Women in Timber 2024, written by Tom Kazee
When I consider the role of women in the timber industry, there are three important points that immediately come to mind. Those would be:
We couldn’t do it without them. For over forty years, I have worked with female foresters, administrators, accounting professionals, managers and executives. In the absence of those essential people, the work could not get done. Most people recognize the terrific value of diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Women in the workplace add the greatest measure of diversity and innovation to our methods and outcomes.
Working smarter not harder. For the first three years of my forestry career, I charged ahead just like every other neanderthal forester before me. Our crew of equipment operators, mechanics, foresters, loggers, and tree planters was 100% male and 100% set in our ways. That lasted until Nancy came to work with us. She was a rising senior at N.C. State and an intern with us for nine months. She was terrifically smart, conscientious, and effective. She was an athletic young woman, very fit, but not able to do the hard labor like the seasoned men. But she didn’t have to. She could do her job more effectively than most men and her potential for success in the industry was off the charts. From that time forward, I had no doubt that women could be just as effective and successful as any man working in forestry operations.
Courage, endurance, and determination are traits we might associate with cops, firemen, or combat veterans. I have observed these traits in great abundance among the single moms that I have worked with over the years and around the country.
Certainly, not all men share everything in common. But many of us guys would struggle as home-makers and care-givers. I know for sure that a stay-at-home mom with two or more kids has a tougher job than I do.
But we have all known women who did it all. And they did it all with grace and good humor. If I commute to work for an hour, work a tedious nine-hour shift, and take care of kids before and after work, I must be dealing with a 14-16 hour day. And those are permanent, full-time responsibilities. Add a dose of financial stress and the trauma of divorce, then every single mom I know would qualify for sainthood.
Obviously, then, Women in Timber would have, at least, these three things to be very proud of: 1) Forestry operations could not function without their contributions. 2) They might work in a different way, but at least as effective as their male counterparts. 3) The courage, endurance, and determination demonstrated by every single mom that I know.
Thanks very much to Lori and the organization that put this all together. Tom Kazee

My Sincerest Thanks
THANK YOU to everyone that helped make the 5th Annual Carolina Women In Timber Conference held on October 9, 2024, not only possible, but successful!
While preparing for the upcoming conference which was to be held in Clinton, South Carolina on October 9, 2024, the state of South Carolina was hit hard by Hurricane Helene on Friday, September 27, 2024, along with North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee! This was a catastrophic storm that would forever change so many lives.
I was truly unsure whether to move forward with the conference. Many women were traveling from South Carolina, but many from North Carolina, and also had members coming from Georgia and Texas!
After speaking with LadyBird Catering, Foothills Forest Products and The Clinton House Plantation, they stood firm in proceeding with the conference as planned. The CWIT members stood behind that decision.
It is because of the commitment and perseverance of so many that proves that the Carolina Women In Timber organization MATTERS!
I am grateful to every single person who helped all of us get through all of this. THANK YOU ALL!
Our organization would not exist without the committed TEAM that believes in us and supports our mission!
Thank you to my friends and family, the CWIT Members, the CWIT Officers, the generous sponsors, the devoted volunteers, and to everyone that has made the Carolina Women In Timber the success that it is!
